The Student Library

The Studentenbibliothek [Student Library] was founded by the Studentenwerk München [Munich Student Union] as an insitution of academic support. It consists of a central lending library for all departments in Leopoldstraße, as well as two reference libraries in the Student Residences Oberwiesenfeld and Freimann.
Owing to a collaboration formed between the Studentenwerk and the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich (LMU) in 2007, the Studentenbibliothek will be run as a joint venture by both of these institutions until 31.07.2010.
Following the integration of smaller text-book assets from areas of the LMU, planned for 2009/2010, the library will again be run by the LMU as the central collection of accademic books.
The library offers nearly 130.000 volumes of academic, educational and recreational literature as well as magazines and newspapers. A total of 200 reading spaces are available within its three departments.
Close to students and studies What makes the Studentenwerk's Student Library so special is the fact that it caters exclusively to the needs and wishes of students: Titles that are particularly in demand are offered in numerous copies, which avoids long waiting periods on prebooked media. Naturally, there is not only books and magazines on offer, but also additional media like learning software. This section of the stock is also steadily extended with new releases. The library of the Studentenwerk is a so-called 'Freihandbibliothek' [Open-Access Library], which means readers have open access to all books. It is the perfect place to browse and look around, because in contrast to the Central Library at the university, visitors can wander from shelf to shelf, subject to subject, and let themselves be seduced by the wide selection of material.
