Preamble

The distribution of rooms in a residential complex within Student Union Services (Studentenwerk München) represents indirect government funding. Taking the total number of apartment-seeking students into consideration, only a small number of rooms are available. The following application and registration requirements should guarantee the fairest possible distribution of government-funded residences. Additionally, each applicant should agree to the following terms of requirements when submitting an application for a spot in a residential complex under Student Services (Studentenwerk München).
1. Requirements for an Application

Registration or matriculation at a university within the jurisdiction of Student Union Services (Studentenwerk München) must be furnished within the semester of application to the following dates: for the winter semester/term up to the 14th of november, for the summer term/semester up to the 14th of may. You must present your registration or matriculation as an indispensable condition to be accepted in a residency. Only students whose monthly incomes do not exceed the BAföG maximum may apply. Applicants above 30 years of age are not eligible to apply except in cases of hardship. Students whose parents live within the commuting area of Munich's linked transport systems (MVV) are not eligible to apply.
2. In General

In general you can apply online.
You can apply to the following conditions:
- for all residencies of the town your university is located
This application offers the chance to get an accomodation place in a fast way in any of the Student Union (Studentenwerk München) residencies.
- for up to three residencies
Through the online process you will have the possibility of indicating a maximum of three desired residential complexes. We will try to accomodate you in accordance with your top choices.
Please consider that an offer made by the Student Union Munich (Studentenwerk München) is binding. This means, if you don't accept the offer your application expires. You have the possibility to apply again but the waiting time of your first application will NOT be taken into account then.
3. Cases of Hardship

Students who find themselves in difficult social positions may apply for preferred accommodation in a residential complex. The following reasons qualify as cases of hardship: disabilities, ailment and pregnancy. Additionally, single student parents are preferred. Financial problems cannot be taken into consideration.
(Please address your application along with the necessary documents, such as a certificate of disability or maternity log, to elisabeth.vogg(at)studentenwerk.mhn.de.)

4. Waiting Periods

Waiting periods may take up to 1-4 semesters depending on the residential complex. Your waiting period may be decreased due to extending the duration of your stay, renovation, construction, etc. Therefore, the time given offers no guarantee of availability.
5. Renewing an Application

In order to update the waiting list, it is necessary for every applicant to renew his or her application every semester by submitting a valid certificate of matriculation. The certificate should be sent by post to the following address: Studentenwerk München, Abt. Wohnen, Leopoldstraße 15, 80802 München, or via e-mail to: onlinebewerbung(at)studentenwerk.mhn.de. The closing dates for this renewal are: the 14th of november for the winter semester/term, the 14th of may for the summer term/semester.

6. Expiration of an Application

An application expires if wrong information was provided. It also expires if matriculation or registration materials were not submitted on time (i.e. application renewal). Furthermore, it expires if the offered residence is not taken within the allotted time.
7. Offering Residences

The offer of residences under Student Union Services (Studentenwerk München) is posted 4-8 weeks before the start of a contract. The return consignment of a signed direct debit authorization qualifies as an acceptance into the residence. The rental agreement will be signed not later than at the hand-over of the keys.
8. Duration of Stay

Lease contracts are finalized as short-term for six semesters (flats) or eight semesters (rooms, flats for married couples). However, the longest duration of study according to the (BAföG-) maximum duration stay provision (Förderungshöchstdauerverordnung) is two additional semesters.
9. Rent Deposit

The rent deposit (Kaution) is normally between 100 and 300 EUR.
10. Taking Effect

These application and registration requirements came into effect on 01/02/2008. The requirements from 01/05/1993 are therefore no longer valid.
